MUTTERINGS (also referred to as “Matterings/Mutterings”) was a group exhibition featuring the lecturers of the Visual Art Department at the University of Johannesburg. Held at Gallery 2 from 1 to 29 April 2023, the show brought together the personal artistic practices of UJ’s academic staff, including Mariapaola McGurk, Karin Basel, Kim Berman, Bevan de Wet, Diane Victor, and others.

 

The exhibition offered a rare opportunity to see the work of the artists shaping the next generation of South African creatives. It highlighted the lecturers’ ongoing contributions as practicing artists while inviting students, alumni, collectors, and the public to engage with contemporary visual thinking from the UJ art department.
